North Labs empowers IMAX with global theatre insights.

North Labs combined a Snowflake data foundation with Amazon QuickSight dashboards and natural language analytics for IMAX. The result gave the cinematic pioneer real-time visibility into theatre equipment, box office performance, and operational trends across its worldwide network.

"We had an excellent delivery experience working with the North Labs team. From scoping the project, through to planning and delivery, everything ran smoothly without issue. I would highly recommend working with the North Labs team. They have positive and talented team members to help you reach your objectives."

The Challenge

One global network, scattered across tools.

IMAX, the renowned American-Canadian theatre company and pioneer of immersive cinema since 1967, operates a global footprint spanning numerous theatres worldwide. Managing data across all of these locations was a complex and time-consuming task.

IMAX needed a solution to efficiently gather, analyze, and present information about each theatre, including equipment status and box office performance, in a unified, user-friendly interface. Employees were juggling multiple applications and spreadsheets just to access critical operational data.

The goal: enable IMAX employees to access real-time theatre data from a single place, eliminating the need to navigate multiple applications or share cumbersome spreadsheets across teams and geographies.

Business Impact

Real-time visibility, end to end.

Streamlined Global Access

IMAX employees can now navigate a single environment to find theatre information across their entire worldwide network, saving valuable time previously spent across multiple applications.

Real-Time Operational Insights

The new dashboards generate real-time insights into theatre equipment status and box office performance, enabling informed decisions and effective planning for future releases.

Natural Language Analytics

Non-technical users can now interrogate IMAX's data using natural language queries, making ad hoc analysis accessible to everyone, not just data specialists.

The Solution

Snowflake underneath. QuickSight on top.

IMAX turned to North Labs to unify data from diverse source systems in one analytics experience. Snowflake formed the cloud data foundation, bringing operational and financial data together for analysis across the global theatre network.

North Labs built Amazon QuickSight dashboards on that foundation. The dashboards represent IMAX's entire theatre footprint and make each location's status and performance accessible in one place. Teams can track equipment health and analyze box office trends without moving between applications.

Amazon QuickSight's natural language capabilities also let non-technical users ask questions of the data directly. This opened ad hoc analysis to business users who had previously relied on analysts or manual spreadsheet work.

Machine learning insights were layered on top, providing trend analysis and predictive forecasting. IMAX can now explore changes over time (horizontal analytics) and changes across specific data dimensions (vertical analytics) to make data-driven decisions about operations and content strategy.

The Outcome

Decisions made on current data.

The partnership transformed how IMAX accesses and acts on operational data. By replacing fragmented applications and spreadsheets with a Snowflake data foundation and Amazon QuickSight analytics, IMAX gained real-time visibility into its global theatre network for the first time.

The combination of a unified data platform, interactive dashboards, natural language queries, and predictive analytics gives operations teams and executives current information for better decisions.
